Kent Attainable Housing to use ARPA funds to aid in homeownership
Kent Attainable Housing, Inc. (KAH) is pleased to announce the acceptance of a $178,750 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Grant from the Town of Chestertown. KAH will use these funds to support its efforts to increase affordable homeownership opportunities and address housing insecurity for low-to-moderate-income families who live or work in Chestertown. “KAH is incredibly grateful to the Chestertown Mayor and Town Council for giving us the opportunity to grow our impact and support the economic vitality of this community. Affordable housing is key to Chestertown’s future. Breaking down barriers to access homeownership will allow local families to build wealth and financial resiliency. The broader Chestertown community will also have the opportunity to garner greater economic stability and investment in development and community revitalization.” said Taylor Frey, President of Kent Attainable Housing’s Board.

Breaking Down the Confusion: The Difference between Rebuilding Together and Kent Attainable Housing
Rebuilding Together Kent County and Kent Attainable Housing are often confused with each other. Still, since they work together on many housing projects, it’s easy to point potential clients in the right direction. While both are involved with addressing housing in Kent County, think of Kent Attainable Housing as the organization that works to “break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by building or renovating affordable houses and partnering with limited-income, working families to prepare for and buy a home,” and Rebuilding Together as the organization that “provides home repairs and modifications to our neighbors with limited resources at no cost to the homeowner.”

Kent Attainable Housing commemorates new location with ribbon cutting
On Friday, Feb. 17, with over 80 community members and leaders in attendance, Kent Attainable Housing, Inc. (KAH) celebrated the opening of its new office location at 114 S. Lynchburg Street, Suite D in Chestertown with a Kent County Chamber of Commerce sponsored Ribbon Cutting and an open house. This location marks the first physical location for KAH to run operations since its founding in 2019.

Kent Attainable Housing, Inc. (KAH) received the 2022 Sustainable Growth Award from the Maryland Department of Planning in the Sustainable Communities category. These awards recognize people and projects that advance sustainable growth and conservation in Maryland and are for facilitating or creating development that addresses at least one or more of Maryland’s 12 Planning Visions. Redlining and Real Estate Appraisal Gaps: Kent Attainable Housing hosts Brooke Lierman
Kent Attainable Housing hosted a lunch and learn with District 46 Delegate Brooke Lierman at The Retriever Bar in Chestertown to discuss state housing policy and implications for local rural communities like Kent County. Brooke was a lead sponsor for legislation that is designed to help confront the real estate appraisal gap in redlined communities; specifically, “the bill would provide funds to help developers cover the gap between renovation costs and appraisal values in certain distressed areas, a persistent thorn in neighborhood redevelopment efforts,” according to Baltimore Business Journal.

Kent Attainable Housing Receives Grant
Mid-Shore Community Foundation has awarded Kent Attainable Housing, a two-year $50,000 grant to convert the part-time executive director position held by Darius Johnson to full time. According to a news release, expanding this essential staff position to full time will strengthen the ability of Kent Attainable Housing to focus on developing and implementing a sustainable model for affordable housing in Kent County, while building community and political support for systemic change and a succession plan to advance the mission over the next decade.

Kent Attainable Housing Mourns Passing of Co-Founder, Ed Minch
When Ed collapsed on Monday afternoon at 24909 Lambs Meadow Road, he was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing. He, along with Bob Ingersoll and some hearty volunteers had endured hot and steamy days to clear garbage, brush, and debris from the site of Kent Attainable Housing’s second affordable house. That day, he planned to finish up with some straw and fencing in advance of laying the foundation. He was hot, and sweaty, and dirty and he was happy.

Garnet House is Now Landscaped
Thanks to ShoreRivers, the new house on College Avenue in Chestertown, built by Kent Attainable Housing (KAH), is now surrounded by a yard full of greenery native to Maryland. Shore Rivers, a regional non-profit organization, has partnered with KAH as part of its mission to promote protection and restoration of Eastern Shore waterways.

Rebuilding Together Partners with Kent Attainable Housing to Complete Garnet House
Since the arrival of the home, volunteers from Rebuilding Together Kent County have been lending their resources and expertise to construct a front porch. “It’s a nice example of collaboration between local non-profits,” said Jon Hanley, Board Member for Rebuilding Together. Wearing masks and socially distancing, a cadre of volunteers has been hard at work since Tuesday. Rebuilding Together Kent County is an affiliate of a national organization which assists low income homeowners in repairing and improving disability access to homes.

Kent Attainable Housing (KAH), the recently-formed non-profit organization, is pleased to announce receipt of a generous donation from ShoreRivers of a river-friendly yard for the Garnet House, its first home located across from Garnet Elementary School on College Avenue in Chestertown.
